Mumps is a highly contagious, painful viral disease which affects the salivary glands and takes its own time to go. The symptoms show up after 20-25 days of being infected.It can only be prevented by immunization through the MMR vaccine, but the pain and discomfort can definitely be reduced with some helpful home remedies. It usually happens once in a life time but in rare cases can occur twice too.

Symptoms of Mumps:

The most common symptoms seen in the patients affected with mumps are as follows:

  • Fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite may occur initially
  • The main salivary glands which are located just below the ears become swollen and quite painful
  • There may be dryness in the mouth
  • Eating, swallowing and even talking can be very difficult due to the intensity of the pain
Precautions:
  • Mumps is highly contagious for 2 days before the swelling and up to 3 days after the swelling has reduced
  • The swelling usually lasts for 4-7 days. So it is really important to keep the patient away from others
  • Wrong diet can worsen the disease, so it is important to follow a light and healthy diet to prevent the patient from further pain
  • Some home remedies for reducing pain of Mumps
    1. Neem leaves
      This leaf has a cure for many health and skin problems due to the abundant benefits it offers. For mumps, just make a paste of a handful of neem leaves and mix it with some turmeric powder. Apply it on the affected parts and this will definitely soothe out your pain
    2. Fenugreek seed:
      This brown little seed is full of vitamins and is known as a reservoir of medicinal properties. For mumps, it is really helpful due to its anti-inflammatory nature. Grind some fenugreek seeds into a paste and apply it to the painful area. This will bring down the intensity of pain and provide comfort
    3. Banyan leaves:
      This one is a well-known remedy for the treatment of mumps. Coat the leaves with ghee, heat it on a flame and put it on the affected area. This will bring down the swelling and pain considerably. If the leaves are gently tied up with a bandage over the affected area and left overnight, it can be more effective
    4. Black pepper:
      Black pepper is known for its anti-inflammatory nature and its antioxidant content. For reducing the inflammation of mumps, make a paste of pepper by adding some water and apply it to the swollen area for effective results.
    5. Hot and cold Fomentation:
      The pain and discomfort in mumps can considerably be reduced with the application of
      hot as well as cold fomentation which can be done every 2-3 hours for 10 minutes. The order is like – 3 hot applications followed by one cold application. For hot fomentation, dip a small towel in warm water and put it on the swollen area. For cold fomentation, place ice packs on the painful area
    6. Aloe vera:
      Aloe vera is nature’s most versatile plant which is extremely effective for any inflamed part of the body. So pluck the leaves of this plant and try to peel a side of it such that it can be placed over the painful area with the gel reaching all over
    7. Ginger :
      This is a versatile root which has abundant benefits due to its medicinal properties. Application of ginger paste over the affected area will certainly bring some relief to the pain. Ginger can also be included in the food consumed by the patient because it is a natural painkiller
    8. Apart from the above remedies, there are some points that should be kept in mind like-

      • The patient should consume lots of water, preferably lukewarm
      • The diet should include plenty of liquids and soft food which does not need too much of chewing
      • Vegetable Soups, which include ginger and garlic can be a good option. To make it more filling, add 2-3 spoons of oats which is healthy and easily edible
      • Acidic foods and fruits should be avoided since they can be painful for the throat
      • And finally, plenty of rest should be taken by the patient until the disease has completely gone
